COVID-19 TIME LOG

How to use the “COVID-19 Thinking Organized Time Log”

Use one COVID-19 Thinking Organized Time Log for each person to specifically set and meet goals during this home-learning time period. Parents most likely will have to supervise, especially until the children are in a routine. Many parents find that using a point system towards mutually agreed on rewards such as free time outside, TV or video games will keep students motivated. You and your child can decide how many points are needed per activity, but be firm that the reward cannot take place until the child has finished at least two work periods.

Another helpful tip: use a timer. Setting a visual reminder that a break is coming helps many children focus more effectively and accomplish tasks more willingly.

Remember to set aside some time for exercise, either before or after your child’s work time. Being active during a brain break can also help refocus students.

Sample Schedule:

WAKE UP! It is important to have a pre-determined time to wake up in the morning. Although the children don’t have to get up at 6 a.m., it is beneficial to establish and maintain a structure that will keep students thinking organized! Set a consistent wake-up time for 9 a.m. or earlier. If teenagers sleep later than 9, they tend to stay up late at night, and nothing productive happens in those late night, binge watching, video playing, after-midnight hours.

Work Time! Everyone is working by 9:30 a.m. with scheduled brain breaks as mini-rewards.

  • 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. 1st Work Time
  • 10:30-10:45 a.m. Brain Break, move around, get water, etc …
  • 10:45 a.m. – 12 p.m. 2nd Work Time
If needed, this longer period can be broken into 20 – 30 minute increments.
  • 12 – 1 p.m Lunchtime!
Eat for ½ hour, then take a walk, or just get some fresh air!
  • 1 – 2:15 p.m. Work Time
  • 2:15 – 2:30 p.m. Brain Break!
  • 2:30 – 4 p.m.   Work Time
  • 4 – 6 p.m. Cash in their points to play games or watch TV, eat dinner, wind down.
  • 6 – 8 p.m. Play some brain games, continue working, read for pleasure or any other fun activities.
  • Bedtime as scheduled by family.

It would be wonderful if each student could follow this time log perfectly; however, we know that there will be bumps along the road. If you’re having trouble, please discuss it with your speech pathologist or mentor, and of course, I am always available to help.
